RSCT Class 03-2003 Hit the Finish Line

BY Judith and Retchel

ROTC Summer Camp Training (RSCT) Class 03-2003 headed by Major George Joel Lalaquil (INF) PA as the training director with Cpt Glenn Jun Calambuhay (INF) PA as the operations officer, Cpt Paterno B. Calero (CE) PA as the Admin./ Finance Officer and their subordinates completed the 21 days of training here.

It’s summer time again, a very special moment for the cadets to pursue their goal of becoming good leaders. It’s really a great chance for the cadets to become part of this training for it is fully supported by the government and it only happened once a year.

21st day of April when the cadets came from different Community Defense Center (CDC)– 1101 CDC, 1102 CDC, 1103 CDC, 1104 CDC and 1106 CDC- gathered in 1106 CDC, New Bucana, Matina Davao City at exactly 12 noon.

These cadets from different provinces of the whole Region XI were able to expose their talents among their co-trainees while waiting for the exact time of departure. At exactly 4 o’clock in the afternoon, the trainees departed from Davao City going to 1102 CDC, 11th RCDG.

It’s the very first time that RSCT was conducted in Tagum. The said training was held in RDR Sports Complex and its vast field served as the pararde ground for the cadets while the rooms in the school next to that sports complex served as the barracks of the cadets who undergo training.

Most of us felt strangers at first because of the new place and different people with different cultures and attitudes. Different feelings came out. Different opinions and expectations voiced out. “Dali lang man tingali ning RSCT!” said one of the cadets while other said, “Hala uy, basi lisod kayo no?! Some of the cadets didn’t know the run of the training but still, courage can be seen in their eyes.

On the 23rd day of April, the Grand Opening of RSCT Class 3-2003 was declared by Col Camilo R . Tolentine (JSSC) PA, 11 RCDG, Group Commander. In the afternoon, there comes the “RECEPTION”. It tests the readiness if the cadets’ physical and mental abilities and served as the GO SIGNAL.

Days after that, trainees had the lecture of different military subjects. Its aim is to give the cadets the knowledge and self improvements. Philippine Army ROTC Entrance Examination (PAAERE), the most talk of all was also conducted last April 27, Sunday afternoon.

One evening, beyond gathering, the cadets elected class officers who are capable for the positions in the class. Agenda had been discussed and it’s decided that the word “MAPIRANGAN” which means “Mga Pinunong May Karangalan/ Leaders with Honor” would be the batch name. It was also decided that the song titled “May Pagbabago” would be the batch song.

May 02, when Col. Tolentino declared the Opening of the Collar. Scattered rain shower poured over us and for us, it signifies blessings. All of the cadets were very much excited not only because of the Open Collar but also because of the Smokers’ Night that evening.

Here comes the Smokers’ Night, a night of freedom, socialization and camaraderie among the cadets, not only for the cadets but also for our dear Instructors.

Together with the smoker’s Night is the Induction of Officers. Cdt. Obesta was inducted as the President of the class, Cdt. Acena as the vice president of the class, Cdt Panso as the Secretary, Cdt Yadao as the Treasurer, Cdt Salazar as the Auditor, Cdt Ambag as the PIO, Cdt Sinoy and Cdt Mahinay as the Business Managers, Cdt Tayo and Cdt Turbolento as he Sergeant at Arms, Cdtte Villanueva as the Muse and Cdt Siotong as the Escort.

The most awaited part of the celebration was the DISCO. Everybody feel the beat of music and no one wasted the evening.

Regular schedule of training continued. We continued to trudge the road to success. “Antos-antos lang ta bay, gamay na lang, di lang pabadlong para dili malubspi (lub-lub fishpond)”, said one of the Cadets. “Makiramdam naman kayo!” also became the words of almost all which came from one of the class marchers.

As part of the training, we had 2 days of educational tour. On the 1st day, we went to 72nd Infantry Battallion (IB) headed by Lt. Col Edmundo Barrientos. They showed us the techniques about the Small Unit Tactics (SUT), they explained the situation during combat patrol as well. We were also given chances to assemble and disassemble different armaments.

On the 2nd day of the tour, we went to 701st Brigade at Kagitingan Tuboran, Mawab, Compostela Valley Province . We had some lecture regarding Introduction to Combat Patrol as well as the different kinds of Armor Fighting Vehicles. Two PMAers – 2Lt Cuntapay and 2Lt Imperial (CAV) PA – gave us the lecture. We’d been given also the privilege to enter the Simba Armor Fighting Vehicle.

Going back to our training ground, we experienced 25km foot march, from 701st IB to Tagum City . Imagine? Walking for many hours?! In spite of bad weather, still we continue the march full of courage, pride and happiness due to all the knowledge that we gained from that tour.

On the next morning, we had a rope course. It’s really a great challenge to us, most especially for the first-timer. Every body experienced the fear and excitement. Some cadets said, “dili nako ni kaya, basi mahulog ko” “dili lagi, kaya nato na girls”. Again, it was successfully done and all were qualified. We also had firing the next day.

And now, all those days- days moved by the cadets on the double, those days of sacrifices with the spice of joy, hit the finish line. It’s now graduation day- a very significant day to all. Different emotions poured out. We are happy and proud for we faced all the challenges and consequences during the training. Now we learn, soon we’ll teach. But, we are sad because it’s the day of good byes.

We met people of different traits, attitude and skills that somehow enhance our capacity to mingle and adjust to everyone’s individuality. For a short period of time, we learned to love each other as brothers and sisters.

We may not see each other again but still memories will remain in our hearts and we’re still hoping that someday we’ll meet again, bearing success.

“Some of you may not become active soldiers, but this training will help you become good citizens”, Mayor Gementiza of Tagum said. Everybody said “Goodbye batch!” But, the word goodbye doesn’t mean that it would be the last time of seeing each other. It’s the only beginning of our journey and we’ll strive and try our best to go beyond SUCCESS. Good luck RSCT Class-03, batch MAPIRANGAN! ‘til next time!!!

(shake hands)
MAPIRANGAN! LUBSPI! ‘TION!

I think paterno calero has done nothing to improve his career as a PMAyer he should have been actively participating in combat here in central mindanao ....

hello anonymous! so what made you say that he's gay? maybe it just so happened that he's assigned in dferent field as everyone in the arm force have thier own areas...

Edie, hello... thans for dropping by! ;)

Sorry to say but I think Paterno Calero is not willing to join us in combat. If he is willing then he should have requested for a transfer here in Tipo-tipo. The 55th if he wants there he can prove his worth.

Hey, I am checking this blog using the phone and this appears to be kind of odd. Thought you'd wish to know. This is a great write-up nevertheless, did not mess that up.
